PAM DORNER: GRAND PRIZE WINNER — "Golden Feather." I had been watching a great-horned owl family near home for weeks. Finally, the perfect conditions presented and I caught the mother owl as she flew away from a woodpile, catching one of her feathers as it fell to the ground. The light was perfect!
COSETTA LEWIS: PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD — "Folklorico." Sophia, my little folklorico dancer shows off her skills in her traditional costume. I took advantage of the adobe courtyard at the Roundhound State Park in Deming, NM to display the colorful full skirt and bodice with colorful flowers and ribbons.
PAM DORNER: 1ST ANIMALS — "Fire and Ice." I spent the first months of the year hoping to photograph Sandhill Crane breath in backlit conditions. I quickly realized this was going to be tougher than originally thought as certain conditions had to be in place to capture this. One morning the stars aligned and I was able to capture this Sandhill crane in the midst of preflight calls. The light gave the impression this crane was breathing fire.
AARON LEWIS: 2ND ANIMALS — "It's Only Monday." I came across this Great Blue Heron at Bosque Del Apache last fall while on a trip with my uncle who was visiting from the Midwest, and my brother who also lives in New Mexico. Growing up as kids, my brother and I learned a lot about waterfowl and wading water birds from my uncle, as he would take us out to the wetlands where we grew up to scout for birds.
BEN CHESEBROUGH: 3RD ANIMALS — "Bighorn Battle." I'd never heard the sound of Bighorn Rams battling until the morning I took this shot. The sound of a low, deep, "CRACK!," not unlike the report of a rifle echoing through the high alpine valley deep in the New Mexican wilderness, is something I'll never forget. I stumbled upon these two during a twenty-mile hike on a lovely Sunday in September below towering 13,000-foot spires.
ELDON VITA: HONORABLE MENTION ANIMALS —"Swallows" This photo was taken on the drive back to Santa Fe from Folsom, NM on the I-25. My wife told me about a rest stop that we HAD to stop at because of the swallows. We ended up staying to photograph them because the lighting was just too perfect. They had completely taken over the rest stop, using every nook and cranny as a nest. This shot was taken through a broken window.
RICHARD LARSSON: 1ST LANDSCAPES — "White Sands National Monument."
BRIAN VANDENZEN: 2ND PLACE LANDSCAPES — "Old Corral, Valle Vidal." The morning sun begins to burn off the fog above an old corral in Valle Vidal, giving the sky a smoky, tobacco color. This is an HDR composite image, combining three images into one to capture the high dynamic range of the scene. Valle Vidal means little place of life. It's a place of remarkable beauty and solitude that's very similar to Yellowstone's Lamar Valley.”
DAVID TURNER: 3RD LANDSCAPES — “The Mothership” While storm chasing with friends in eastern New Mexico, we watched this develop in front of us and then the chase was on. We headed south of Tucumcari looking for a spot that would keep us in front of this supercell and safe. Just before sunset we found this location. I quickly framed up this image and as the setting sun lit up the sky, I was able to capture this photogenic supercell.
PAM DORNER: HONORABLE MENTION LANDSCAPES — "Snowcapped." Winter storm clouds over the frosty Sandia Mountains at sunset. I almost didn't go out on this bitterly cold and cloudy evening, but I decided to look for wildlife. I noticed the clouds were starting to break up over the mountains. I headed quickly to the river and witnessed one of the most glorious sunsets, starting out golden and turning into beautiful shades of pink.
SHIRLEY ESTES: 1ST PLACE MOBILE — “Glowing Grace” is of my 20’ tepee on our property in Ruidoso, NM. My husband and I went out to watch the Blue Moon rise on August 30, 2023. We started a fire inside the tepee to stay warm and relax, until the moon became visible. I went outside to take photos of the moon, but the fire pit and the reflection of the moon had caused an almost surreal glow coming from the tepee, so I photographed the tepee instead.
LINDSAY DAMRON: 2ND PLACE MOBILE — "Balloon Festival." This photo was taken at the Balloon Fiesta Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico during a morning mass accension. The sunrise perfectly rose behind the Sandias and a balloon as it was inflating illuminating the balloon. It caught my eye, and it was a bit of a right place right time moment. I was born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico and have a true passion for all things New Mexico.
TADSON BUSSEY: 3RD PLACE MOBILE — "El Vado Motel." First opened in 1937, this motel has been a frequent stop while traveling Route 66. It had been run down but was recently renovated when I stopped there with a group of friends. Close to sunset I captured this view of the motel with the vigas casting long shadows and the blue trim matching the intense blue of the sky.
SCOTT PIRTLE: HONORABLE MENTION — "Rain and Rust, Sunshine and Dust." The photo was taken at Bear Paw Ranch along the Gila River in the southwest area of the state. There must be thousands of old trucks parked in pastures and entrances to properties across NM. I love them and am always drawn to them. Upon walking around this old 1954 Chevy after a cold morning rain, I noticed the remarkable light inside so took this nostalgic photo.
RICHARD LARSSON: 1ST PLACE NIGHTSCAPES — "Bluff Springs."
BEN CHESEBROUGH: 2ND PLACE NIGHTSCAPES — "Milky Way in the Pecos Wilderness." On the first of a two-day trek high in a New Mexico wilderness area, I arrived at an alpine lake as the sun set. I immediately appreciated the character of this gnarled stump on the lake shore, and watched it as the sunlight faded and the Milky Way rose overhead. The lights of nearby Santa Fe softly lit the passing clouds.
JAIMIE MURDOCK: 3RD PLACE NIGHTSCAPES — "Monsoon Nights" I shot this returning from the Kiwani's Cabin. We were hoping for a storm and some close bolts, but instead were treated to rolling fog and inversions across the Rio Grande Valley, framing Albuquerque between the layers.
ANTHONY CROWLEY: HONORABLE MENTION NIGHTSCAPES — "The Windmill Sentinel at Capulin." My friend and I had spent the day photographing the vast grasslands between Raton and Folsom and then went in search of a Milky Way location. When we stumbled on this windmill and the dormant volcanic cone with perfect southerly alignment for the Milky Way just SW of the small town of Capulin, we knew we had found our spot.
CHANEL FLORES: 1ST PLACE PEOPLE — "Within Reach." I love capturing the real emotions of my subjects. After an hour's shoot with this boy and his mom in Torreon, NM; we came across this pear tree, where at least a hundred pears had fallen to the ground. Abram stepped over these carefully while looking for one he could pick himself. This one was within his reach. He plucked it proudly, and immediately took a huge bite!
TIM HOLT: 2ND PLACE PEOPLE — "Skater Sunland Park." It was late in the afternoon, and there was only one skater using the facilities. From my drone, I liked how the shadows were forming, and thought about how the shadows are the only way to quickly see that this is a skater when photographing from above. I live in nearby Canutillo Texas, and drive by the skate park in Sunland Park often.
AUSTIN HARVEY: 3RD PLACE PEOPLE — "Radiant Elegance." My friend Paris Maese leaning against the wall outside of the store, Masks y Mas, in Nob Hill, Albuquerque.
SHANNON STEVENS: HONORABLE MENTION PEOPLE — "Jemez Wedding Feast." This photo represents Native American/Indigenous people at our very BEST! It was a coming together, in one joyful happy accord to do what we as Native people do best - taking care of family and feeding everyone who walks in the door. There were at least 20 women waiting on the bridal party and the hundred or so guests surrounding this scene.
JOAQUIN MARTINEZ: HONORABLE MENTION 2 PEOPLE — Chisme! My daughter and her friends who dance with the EmiArte Flamenco Youth Academy in Santa Fe were chatting about the intricacies of Bulerias, Sevillanas, and Alegrias on a beautiful Sunday afternoon while I took in the beauty of the spaces built by my ancestors.
JIM SHEPKA: 1ST PLACE NEW MEXICO EXPERIENCE — "Hard Days Ride." I was fortunate to be at the stables of the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort when a group of staff and volunteers returned from an evening ride. I aligned myself with the fast setting sun as a backdrop and quickly fired off a few images as the horses gathered while kicked up dust. It’s a rare thing when timing, circumstances and lighting all come together.
AUGUSTINE FERNANDEZ: 2ND PLACE NEW MEXICO EXPERIENCE — "At the Inn of the Street." I secured this iconic Taos sunset when fresh snow had just fallen, and the clouds were dispersing as the sun descended. Equipped with my camera and a 200mm lens, I opted for a composition technique known as compression, which makes the foreground smaller and the background larger. I zoomed in for the perfect frame and captured the moment.
ROBERT MCDOUGALL: 3RD PLACE NEW MEXICO EXPERIENCE —"Birds over San Francisco de Assisi Mission Church." This church has been painted or photographed by almost every contemporary artist, amateur and professional. Yet, every time I photograph it, I find something new. On this occasion I was thrilled with the dance of the birds, the light, and the deep shadows on the church as well as the white crosses against the dark sky.
AUSTIN HARVEY: HONORABLE MENTION NEW MEXICO EXPERIENCE — "Ballet of Balloons." This photo is of two hot air balloons floating along a riverbed. The balloons are owned by Donnette Ford and Tom Kious. This specific day they were training pilots and I was able to take this photo from above using my drone.
DAVID TURNING: HONORABLE MENTION 2 — "Electric Roadrunner." I was returning to Las Cruces when I ran into an active thunderstorm that had heavy rain and lots of lightning. A few miles out of town I drove out of the rain and began to think of a subject to photograph with the lightning... just up ahead of me was the rest stop with the iconic recycled roadrunner, so I pulled off, set up my camera and took this image before it began raining on me again.
